Lakeview Art Supply on Lincoln near Paulina Brown Line stop. Very reasonable prices for the things I need.

I was just going to say that. I like that store too.

Michael's is indeed low key, but the lowest key of all is Hobby Lobby. It's a nightmare, but convenient.

I scrounge around for what's on sale and have gotten tube paints, brushes, interesting papers, canvases, and other stuff for cheap. Depending on what you're looking for, the prices are fairly good and selection's not too bad, if you can stand the Scrapbooking Mamas and the knickknacks.

I mostly do Hobby Lobby and Michael's because I am stuck in the suburbs and have to make do. I used to get my stuff at Herman's until they closed--and years ago, when I lived just off Broadway & Belmont, I got most of my supplies at the Drum. Is that place still around?

Hobby Lobby? Eewwww! They're closed on sundays, as it's god's rest day.
Depending on what suburb you're in, I'd like to hear recommendations for out there too. I personally am a fan of Carlson's Art & Paint. They have locations in Downers Grove and Wheaton.

"Hobby Lobby" is usually where I like to go too. I find it's less inexpensive than ordering through Dick Blik and get the same material at the spare of the moment shopping. I'm a visual person and I need to actually see what I'm buying, not like out of a catalogue. However the last order I placed was about eight years ago, I bought my "French" Easel and matt cutters. Still in working condition from Dick Blik. Can't say I've ever been to "Michaels".

I usually go to walmart for cheap basic spray paints, and I used to get paint markers wholesale through my work. If I don't want to stretch my own canvases niu bookstore has all different canvases big small square round blah blah blah, I picked up a 7'x8' canvas there for like 30 bucks I think it was. so if your ever in the niu area check out the bookstore on annie glidden and lucinda.
other then that I usually order offline. You can find really good deals on supplies, and you can find some high quality sparypaints that aren't thinned out and have a low pressure spray.

    that my two cents
